Harlem Nocturne

“Harlem Nocturne” is a jazz standard written by Earle Hagen and Dick Rogers in 1939 for the Ray Noble orchestra. It is one of the most recorded songs in history, covered by an amazing variety of artists, including Woody Herman, Johnny Otis, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Bill Haley and His Comets, the Lounge Lizards, Duke Ellington, Harry James, King Curtis, David Sanborn, Alicia Keys,  the Ventures (on their second album), the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Danny Gatton.

My version is firmly in the early-60’s tradition, with some influence from the Ventures.

Shakin’ All Over

“Shakin’ All Over” is a song originally performed by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates. The song was written by frontman Johnny Kidd, and his recording of it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in August 1960. The original recording was not a hit outside of Europe.

In the USA “Shakin’ All Over” is better known in versions by other artists. In 1964 a local band from Plattsburgh, NY called the Twiliters recorded a live version of it. It did well in New England but did not chart nationally.  A 1965 cover by The Guess Who reached #1 in Canada, and also top 40 in the US and Australia.

I think this is a great “garage band” tune that works very well as an instrumental.

I Fought the Law

This is my instrumental cover of “I Fought the Law”, which was written by Sonny Curtis of the Crickets. It was popularized by a cover done by the Bobby Fuller Four, which went on to become a top-ten hit for that band in 1966.

California Sun/Let’s Dance

“California Sun” was a #5 hit for the Riverias in early 1964. It is often considered the last American hit before the British invasion. “Let’s Dance” was a #4 hit for Chris Montez in 1962. I put them together because the introductions and arrangements are similar and when one starts I often think it’s the other.

Two Years Past

Here is a new, original smooth jazz tune — which seemed a good excuse for a bunch of pictures of Lacey, our 11-year-old coon hound mix.
