Wayback Garage #20: Rap City

This originally appeared on a 1964 Ventures album. You will likely recognize the tune. It is Brahm’s Hungarian Dance #5, one of the most recognizable melodies in the world. Consider the title “Rap CIty” … it is a play on “Rhapsody”. Brahms wrote many Rhapsodies, but the most famous Hungarian Rhapsodies are Liszt’s.

It is a small point. One of my favorite things to do is arrange a tune one would not expect in the genre. The Ventures certainly did that here.

My arrangement follows theirs, but I improved the voice leading. I took counterpoint classes, they didn’t.
