Wayback Garage #23: New Orleans

A top-ten hit for Gary U.S. Bonds in 1960, “New Orleans” was also covered by the Ventures on their 1963 album “Let’s Go”. A classic example of “call and response”, my version is based on the Ventures cover.

Let’s Go

This instrumental by the Routers peaked at #19 in early 1963. The Routers were led by Michael Z. Gordon, who also founded and lead the Marketts of “Out of Limits” fame. Both bands were active at the same time. Gordon went on to a very successful career producing both movies and TV.

The original features an infectious clapping and “Let’s Go!” chant which became a favorite of cheerleaders and crowds worldwide. The Ventures covered the tune soon after its original release.
