Do You Hear What I Hear?

This is my instrumental arrangement of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” – a song written in October 1962, with lyrics by Noël Regney and music by Gloria Shayne. The pair, married at the time, wrote it as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Regney had been invited by a record producer to write a Christmas song, but he was hesitant due to the commercialism of Christmas. The song has sold tens of millions of copies and has been covered by hundreds of artists.

Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer

This is my instrumental guitar-rock cover of “Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer”. It was composed by Johnny Marks based on a 1939 story, published by the Montgomery Ward Company. Gene Autry’s recording hit No. 1 on the U.S. charts the week of Christmas 1949. Autry first rejected the song, but his wife convinced him to use it. It has been recorded by countless artists since, including the Ventures – who included it on the 1965 Christmas album.

Sleigh Ride

This is my cover of “Sleigh Ride”, composed by Leroy Anderson and first recorded by the Boston Pops Orchestra, conducted by Arthur Fiedler, in 1949. Lyrics were added in 1950. It has been recorded by countless artists, including the Ventures, who included it on their 1965 and 2002 Christmas albums.

My arrangement is pretty much like the original, adapted for guitar, piano, bass and drums.

Love Is All We Have

“Love Is All We Have” is an original composition. I would describe it as being vaguely French-sounding, as I can hear the influence of Michel Legrand and Francis Lai. I’ve arranged a number of their songs recently, and very much admire their work. The style of the setting is intended to be similar to something the Shadows might have done in the 1980s.

Busy Body

“Busy Body” is an original composition intended to be in the style of 1960s guitar instrumentals like the Ventures did. This one pays tribute to the 12-bar blues-based tracks frequently used to fill out albums.

The track also is intended as something of a showcase for the bass guitar, which is here played with a pick. Many — if not most — of the bass guitarists in the rock era were converted guitar players as opposed to bassists who started out on upright.

On this track I play all the parts (except drums) on camera, and all are instruments built by Nash Guitars.

Sabre Dance

This is my surf-rock arrangement of Aram Khatchaturian’s famous “Sabre Dance”. To be honest, it didn’t need all that much arranging to work this way.

It was originally a movement in the final act of Khachaturian’s 1942 ballet “Gayane”, where the dancers display their skill with swords.

The middle section is based on an Armenian folk song.
