Cheap Phil Rides Again

“Cheap Phil Rides Again” is an original instrumental intended to evoke the feel of an early 1960s Ventures album track used to “fill out” an album or serve as a “B-side”. Both the Ventures and Shadows discographies are full of tracks like this. In many, many cases, I actually prefer these tracks to the “featured” ones.

Dusty

“Dusty” is my tribute to Dusty Hill, who passed away on July 28, 2021. A founding member of that little old band from Texas, ZZ Top, Dusty Hill laid down a driving bottom end, locking down the rhythm with Frank Beard behind Billy Gibbons. Some people are not really replaceable.

All By Myself

This is my instrumental cover of “All By Myself” which was first released by Eric Carmen in 1975. It was his first hit after leaving the Raspberries, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The other well-known version was be Celine Dion, released in 1996 and reaching #4 on the Hot 100. The song borrows heavily from the 2nd movement of Serge Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto. My arrangement borrows even more.

It was rewritten with English lyrics in the 20th century as “Yellow Bird”. Exotica musician Arthur Lyman made the song a hit in 1961.
