Magic Carpet

This is my cover of “Magic Carpet”, originally released in 1963 by the English instrumental group, the Dakotas. These are the same Dakotas who composed and were the first to release the classic surf instrumental, “The Cruel Sea”. They also went on the become Billy J. Kramer’s backup band, much as the Shadows backed up Cliff Richard.

“Magic Carpet” was composed by George Martin, who was their producer — as well as being the producer for the Beatles.

My arrangement is more in the style of the Shadows than the Dakotas.

This is my instrumental cover of “Somewhere”, a song from the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story that was made into a film in 1961. The music was composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

My arrangement is based on the Shadows 1967 version, which was released as the “B-side” to the single “Tomorrow’s Cancelled”.

“Driftin'” was released in 1959 by a British instrumental group known at the time in England as the Drifters. They would later that year change the group’s name from the Drifters to the Shadows — due to the name conflict with the American R&B/doo wop vocal group the Drifters.

The song is a 12-bar blues-derived, riff-based rocker written by lead guitarist Hank Marvin. My version is a fairly literal cover.

Emanando de las Sombras

“Emanando de las Sombras” is an original instrumental intended to invoke the early 1960s style of the Shadows.

Danza de la Sombra

“Danza de la Sombra” is another original instrumental composition in which I try to combine the feel of 60’s instrumental guitar rock with a somewhat more complex musical and harmonic language than was typical for that genre. With this one I tried to get a feel similar to the early 60’s style of the Shadows.
