I’ll Never Fall in Love Again

This is my instrumental cover of “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”.  It was written by composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David for the 1968 musical “Promises, Promises”.

Several recordings of the song were released in 1969, the most popular of which was by Dionne Warwick, who took it to number six on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100. Another popular version was by Bobbie Gentry, who topped the UK chart. Many people are also familiar with the Carpenters’ version from their 1970 album “Close to You”.

Don’t Cry for Me Argentina

This is my instrumental cover of “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”, based on the Shadows’ classic 1978 arrangement which charted and #5 on the UK charts. Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, it was first recorded by Julie Covington for the 1976 concept album Evita, and later included in the 1978 musical of the same name.

One Hand One Heart

This is my instrumental version of “One Hand One Heart”. Music is by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It is from the musical West Side Story, which debuted in 1957.

I was a bit surprised to be unable to find any guitar instrumental versions from the early to mid sixties of this lovely tune. For that matter I could also not find anything more recent by the Shadows or the Ventures. The Shadows did record some of the songs from West Side Story, including “Tonight” and “There’s a Place for Us”.

Ten Seconds to Heaven

“Ten Seconds to Heaven” is based on “Stranger in Paradise”, which in turn was taken from music composed by Alexander Borodin (1833–1887).  “Stranger in Paradise” was from the 1953 musical “Kismet”.

“Ten Seconds to Heaven” was released in 1965 by the Ventures as the “B-Side” to their single “Bird Rocker”, which was based on music by Tchaikovsky. It also appeared on the 1965 album, “The Ventures Knock Me Out”.

My version is more of an adaptation of the Ventures’ approach than a cover.

“Tonight” is a wonderful song from the classic musical, “West Side Story” — composed by Leonard Bernstein. The Shadows included an arrangement on their 1964 album “Dance with the Shadows”. It was not released as a single, but was included on an E.P.

My instrumental version is basically a cover of the Shadows arrangement with a few minor changes in the harmonization.

Hernando’s Hideaway

“Hernando’s Hideaway” is the most famous song from the mid-1950’s Broadway Musical, “The Pajama Game”. It is something of a novelty number, with the feel of a Tango. The Ventures covered it on their 1962 album “Mashed Potatoes and Gravy” — this is the inspiration for my version.
